more Doughty than the record store can handle...

Mike Doughty played his very first show here in Boise, Idaho this evening. It was everything one could want from a free show. He was accompanied by, what could only be defined as his perfect counterpart, Andrew "Scrap" Livingston. In previous shows, "Scrap" has done an outstanding job adding his touch with the cello to the dynamic that Mike brings forth with his guitar. Tonight, however, "Scrap" joined in the festivities with an electric guitar. It was nothing short of beautiful, amazing, spectacular...

The Record Exchange was an ideal stage for Mike to do what Mike does best...intereact with the crowd. Mike wondered if his inital flubs during the first three songs where due to the fact that he was performing in a record store. I wonder if all the fans packed in around the CD racks and vinyl displays was something foriegn to him. He wasn't looking out into the faimiler solid sea of faces mouthing the words that he was singing. Regardless of the mis-cued chords or the mis-placed lyrics, Mike pulled it together and coasted through the remainder of the set with ease.

Upon my arrival to the venue I noticed that Mike was browsing the knick-knacks for sale at the front of the store. Without hesitation I made my way toward him and made his acquaintance and shook the man's hand. We chatted for a few moments and then I asked him if it was alright if I snapped some pictures during the show. His pause before answering the question was evidence to me that he is seldom asked that particular question. His answer was of course "Yes", but I believe he appreciated the thoughtfulness.

Highlights of the show, for me personally, included "Circles", "Busting Up a Starbux" and "Looking At the World From the Bottom of a Well". The arrangements of these three song were the best I've ever heard. I've also never been that close to Mike while he was playing and I was drawn to his every strum of the guitar. The man is magic to me.
